It’s odd to think that we’ve been here for over a month already. Most of our time has been sucked up by that bizarre Songkran festival, and the rest by our inability to speak more than a few words of Thai.
It’s amazing how not (yet) speaking the language of the country one is living in can make a person feel like a complete and utter moron. We’ve passed the tourist stage. That was the first 2 weeks, wherein saying loudly and slowly, “Can you help me with…?” seemed to suffice. But now that just feels dumb. And, undoubtedly, the Thais we meet must wonder why we live here, have kids in a local school, and yet don’t speak Thai.
And especially after living in India where we could easily communicate in either Hindi/Urdu or English, it feels somewhat bizarre to suddenly be dependent on the few English-speaker here for help translating for us. It’s like being a child again.
Fortunately for us, we start our language school soon. Until now we’ve spent most of our time travelling around the city looking at schools, comparing options, and getting both kids registered in school, uniforms sewn, books purchased etc! But that should (dear God, please!) change very soon as we plan to start our formal language study on June 5th at a local university here. Woohoo!

Happy Anniversary Dan and Jen. Hang in there. Soon you will be skilled conversationalists and these helpless days will be long gone. We love you and are praying for you daily. How Fun! PW
